Enrollment and re-registration 
 
The enrollment is the official registration of a student at a college. At an enrollment, you have to be there in person. After the enrollment, you will receive a course attendance record, a student identity card and a student's confirmation. 
 
In Germany, you do nor have to enroll once, but have to re-register after every semester. For doing so, you transfer the social contribution (and if necessary the tuition fees) and collect your new student's confirmation and the new semester ticket at the student's secretary's office a few days later. 
 
Please notice the re-registration deadline, it may be in the semester break. Those who re-register too late have to pay a fine! If you do not re-register, your name will be taken off the university's register automatically after a short time – you may lose your residence permit by this.

If you are staying in Germany for a longer period of time, it is helpful to open a giro account (checking account). With a giro account, you can transfer payments for your rent, for example, or have your salary transferred from your employer – checks or cash payments are unusual for these purposes in Germany. With the bank card (the so called EC-card) you can also pay in many shops. Credit cards are less common in Germany. 
 
You can withdraw money from your account at automated tellers offered by your bank or their partners anywhere in Germany. This service is free of charge unless you are using an automated teller that is run by a different bank.

Almost all banks offer free accounts for students, but sometimes there is an age limit. However, there are differences in conditions (e.g. interest rate or overdraft credit). 
 
As long as you are still enrolled as a student, you can use a free account. At some banks (e.g. the "Sparkasse"), there is no age limit. 
 
If you cannot get an account for student conditions any more, you should compare the prices of different banks. Accounts with limited service are especially cheap and sometimes even free of charge; many fees are also reduced for online banking.

Most parts of Germany can be reached from here within a few hours, e.g. it takes 3 hours to journey to Hamburg, a journey to Berlin can be completed in 3 hours and 30 minutes, travel to Munich will take less than 6 hours. 
 
Moreover, Bochum is linked to its neighbouring cities by a number of regional train (RE) lines and by two "S-Bahn" connections. Travelling to the adjacent cities of Essen and Dortmund will require about 10 minutes in the RE.

The international airport Düsseldorf can be reached by train in 35 minutes, or in 45 minutes travelling by car. Travel on the "Regionalexpress" (RE 1, RE 11 or RE 6) will at the moment cost around 12,50 €. 
 
The international airports Cologne-(Köln-)Bonn and Münster-Osnabrück are about one hour's car journey away, they, too, can be reached on public transport.

All students in Germany have to take out medical insurance. Without a proof of a health insurance, you cannot enroll at a college. 
 
There are compulsory insurances as well as private ones. The contribution and the benefits, which the health insurances offer, differ a lot. In general, the compulsory insurances are cheaper, but the private ones have more benefits.

Release from the compulsory insurance 
 
If your home country has signed a social treaty with the Republic of Germany, you can release yourself from the contributions of a compulsory insurance at a German insurance company. Students from the following countries may get a release if they are already medically insured in their home country: 
 
Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Republik of Yugoslavia (Serbia, Montenegro), Sweden, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey. 
 
It would be better to check before whether your health insurance company is acknowledged in Germany and which treatment costs are covered. 
 
Student health insurance 
 
With the admission of your college, you can insure yourself at a compulsory insurance. To take out the insurance, you need: 
 
    passport 
    bank account 
    admission of the college 
 
At the moment, the costs for a student health insurance are 77,01 €  (78,50 €) per month. These contributions are equal for all compulsory insurances and will be debited from your account. The student health insurance ends with your 30th birthday or after 14 semesters. After that, you can stay in the compulsory insurance as a free member or change to a private company, the costs will be higher in both cases. 
 
Please notice that the student health insurance is only valid starting with the beginning of studying. If you are in Germany before this deadline, you have to take out at a private insurance company for this period of time. 
 
Exceptions for the student health insurance 
 
Those who attend a sixth-form college or German classes, those who come to Germany as a visiting scientist or are older than 30 years or 14th semester at the point of beginning the studies have to insure themselves privately. The "Deutsche Studentenwerk" (the association of all German Studentenwerke) has signed a cheap outline agreement with the Union insurance company.

The first point of contact for students looking for a room is the AKAFÖ. The AKAFÖ runs 19 halls of residence with 4.200 places on offer,(There st 1 Student residence in Gelsenkirchen city ) which are particularly popular with foreign students: they are close to the university, usually furnished and relatively affordable. In seven of the AKAFÖ residences places for disabled students are on offer. There is special accommodation available for families and couples.

When you received your admission for studying, you can apply for a visa (residence permit in form of a visa) at the German embassy or the German consulate. Students from the EU and some other countries do not need a visa.

Which visa is the right one? 
 
There are two kinds of visa which are suitable for students: 
 
    * a university applicants visa ("Studienbewerbervisum") is only valid for three months. It is thought to gather information in Germany about the course of studies or to gain missing prerequisites for an application. This visa can be changed into a "residence permit for studying" after a successful admission. 
 
    * the students visa ("Studentenvisum") is given to foreign students who already have an admission for a German college or sixth-form college. It can be changed into a "residence permit for studying" as well. 
 
A language course visa ("Sprachkursvisum") only makes sense if you only want to attend a language course and not take up studies afterwards. It is only valid for the period of the language course and can not be changed into a students visa. If you want to study in Germany after a language course, you should apply for a university applicants visa right from the beginning. 
 
Please do not enter Germany with a tourist or visitors visa! These visa cannot be changed into a residence permit for studying. You would have to travel back to your home country to apply for a different visa.

As a foreigner, you need to hand in a written application for admission to a course of studies. The closing date for applications for the summer semester is 15 of January the latest, the closing date for the winter semester is 15 of July the latest. Most of the courses of studies begin in the winter semester but some subjects also start in the summer semester. It really is important that you stick to the closing dates for the applications but please do not apply too early as well. Your application can be worked on after a certain date. It would be sensible to send in your application two months early to the closing date. 
 
Foreign students have to apply in any case, no matter whether there is a restricted admission or not. In case of restricted admission in a subject, there are special rules.

Study subjects may be under restricted admissions locally, at a single college, or nationwide. If your chosen subject is under restricted admissions only locally, you can apply directly at the college. In the case of nationwide restricted admissions (e.g. Medicine), students from the EU can turn to the ZVS (the central office for allocation of study places). Foreign students from other countries have to turn to the International Office of the particular college. 
School marks, aptitude tests or selection talks might be some criteria for the admission. 
 
The admission is often called Numerus Clausus or NC (Latin for "restricted number"). 
 
Application documents 
 
Before you send in your application you should double-check your documents whether they are complete. If an application is incomplete or defective it will not be worked at or only with delay in time. Usually, certificates or other diploma are handed in as a certified copy including translations and not as an original.
