When you received your admission for studying, you can apply for a visa (residence permit in form of a visa) at the German embassy or the German consulate. Students from the EU and some other countries do not need a visa.<br />
<br />
Whether you need a visa or not, can be seen in this list. Please remember to apply for the visa on time (at least two months before entering the country).<br />
<br />
Independently from whether you need a visa or not, all foreign students who are staying for a longer period in Germany need a residence permit. You can apply for this right after your arrival in Bochum.<br />

<b>Which visa is the right one?</b><br />
<br />
There are two kinds of visa which are suitable for students:<br />
<br />
    * a university applicants visa ("Studienbewerbervisum") is only valid for three months. It is thought to gather information in Germany about the course of studies or to gain missing prerequisites for an application. This visa can be changed into a "residence permit for studying" after a successful admission.<br />
<br />
    * the students visa ("Studentenvisum") is given to foreign students who already have an admission for a German college or sixth-form college. It can be changed into a "residence permit for studying" as well.<br />
<br />
A language course visa ("Sprachkursvisum") only makes sense if you only want to attend a language course and not take up studies afterwards. It is only valid for the period of the language course and can not be changed into a students visa. If you want to study in Germany after a language course, you should apply for a university applicants visa right from the beginning.<br />
<br />
Please do not enter Germany with a tourist or visitors visa! These visa cannot be changed into a residence permit for studying. You would have to travel back to your home country to apply for a different visa.<br />

As a foreigner, you need to hand in a written application for admission to a course of studies. The closing date for applications for the summer semester is 15 of January the latest, the closing date for the winter semester is 15 of July the latest. Most of the courses of studies begin in the winter semester but some subjects also start in the summer semester. It really is important that you stick to the closing dates for the applications but please do not apply too early as well. Your application can be worked on after a certain date. It would be sensible to send in your application two months early to the closing date.<br />

Foreign students have to apply in any case, no matter whether there is a restricted admission or not. In case of restricted admission in a subject, there are special rules.<br />

<b>Restricted admissions</b><br />
<br />
Study subjects may be under restricted admissions locally, at a single college, or nationwide. If your chosen subject is under restricted admissions only locally, you can apply directly at the college. In the case of nationwide restricted admissions (e.g. Medicine), students from the EU can turn to the ZVS (the central office for allocation of study places). Foreign students from other countries have to turn to the International Office of the particular college.<br />
School marks, aptitude tests or selection talks might be some criteria for the admission.<br />
<br />
The admission is often called Numerus Clausus or NC (Latin for "restricted number").<br />

<br />
Before you send in your application you should double-check your documents whether they are complete. If an application is incomplete or defective it will not be worked at or only with delay in time.     Applicants who have taken German as a foreign language classes and have successfully passed the „Festellungsprufüng or Abschlussprufüng“ in a German Studienkolleg.<br />
    Applicants who have completed a limited part of their studies as an exchange student at a German university.<br />

<b>This examination is held by the University itself and consists of 4 written parts:</b><br />

1. Oral comprehension<br />

There follows the final oral examination.<br />

The universities are allowed to set their own version of the exam within the given framework. It is therefore important to enquire about the particular requirements of the university in question.<br />

<b>What is required in the examination ?</b><br />
<br />

1. Oral comprehension <br />
<br />
A text of 50-100 lines is read out twice. You should take notes during the 2nd reading. Afterwards, questions relating to the structure and content of the texts need to be answered and a summary produced.<br />
<br />
2. Reading comprehension<br />
<br />
A scientific text of 30-60 lines, often adapted for the general reader, needs analysis. This consists of answering questions as to content and stucture, an explanation of the constituent parts, and the summarizing and re-structuring of the text.<br />
<br />
3. Writing <br />
<br />
From the given starting material - theses, short pieces of text, diagrammes and pictures - you are required to write a longer continuous piece of text in which the individual parts are described and explained. In this, it is not only contextual criteria such as the text structure and logical consistency that are important, but also the quality of use of language.<br />
<br />
4. Linguistic structure<br />
<br />
This test involves extension and convertion, using the vocabulary in the given written or oral presentation. The requirement is competence in grammatical structure such as is typically present in scientific texts.<br />
<br />
The duration of the written DSH test is generally 180 minutes in total. The individual parts can vary depending on the tasks. The oral test takes 20 minutes. Beforehand, you receive a short text or picture, normally from your specialisation, to analyse for another 20 minutes. In your discussion, you should show that you are able to understand, review and comment on the presentation of facts or the line of reasoning in a scientific work.<br />

<b>Formalities</b><br />

<br />
Be careful not to miss the final date of application date. The university must have received all the necessary documents by that date, otherwise your application will be denied ! <br />

- a fully-completed application form ( not forgetting your minor subjects !);<br />
<br />
- an officially certified copy,in the local language, proving entitlement to higher education.<br />
<br />
Depending on the country, this could be issued by:-<br />

      a German embassy or consulate;<br />

      the school or university which gave the matriculation certificate;<br />
<br />
      an attorney having the necessary authorization.<br />
<br />
In Germany this could be:<br />
<br />
      your country's embassy or consulate;<br />
<br />
      an attorney;<br />
<br />
      an accredited, sworn, translator.<br />
<br />
- an officially certified translation of the permit for higher education, except for the following languages: Daenisch, Englisch, Franzoesisch, Hollaendisch, Islaendisch, Italienisch, Katalanisch, Norwegisch, Portugiesisch, Rumaenisch, Spanisch, Schwedisch, Lateinisch.<br />

- An official notificaton of recognition from the Certificate Recognition Office (Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle) is required for certain countries.<br />
<br />
- Curriculum Vitae up to the date of application.<br />
<br />
- Statement of Motivation (Motivationsschreiben).<br />

- Proof of knowledge of German (Intermediate Level II). <br />
