There is obviously the TestDAF – a standard examination conducted across various centres across countries and the DSH examination offered by the University applied to. You are asked to treat a set of tasks which require comprehension of context and detail as well as implicit information. There are three texts at variable levels of difficulty. The text types and task types also vary. (Short texts on everyday life at university, newspaper / magazine articles and articles from academic journals).<br />

You are asked to prove your ability to understand spoken texts related thematically and linguistically to the field of higher education. There are three listening texts at variable levels of difficulty: a dialogue typical of everyday life at university, a radio interview with three or four speakers, and a short lecture or an interview with an expert. The text types and tasks also vary. The tasks require comprehension of context and detail as well as implicit information.<br />

<b>Written Production </b><br />
<br />
You are asked to prove your ability to write a clearly structured and coherent text dealing with a specific topic. In the first section, you are asked to describe statistical data presented in a graph or a table. The second section asks you to state your opinion on a specific question for discussion.<br />

<b>Oral Production </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
You are asked to prove your ability to speak German in different situations related to the field of higher education. The subtest consists of seven tasks at variable levels of difficulty. You are asked to respond in various university situations: e.g. take part in adiscussion with fellow students, describe a diagram during a tutorial, state your opinion on a particular topic, form hypotheses. The tasks in the subtest Oral Production are CD- or cassette-based. You can follow them simultaneously in your examination booklet. Your responses are recorded on a second CD or cassette.<br />

If you have started learning German only recently, it is advisable to wait until you have reached an intermediate level before registering for the examination. You can do an online placement test on the TestDaF Institute website to find out if you are already Fit for the TestDaF. It only takes ten minutes to complete and will give you a rough idea of your level.<br />

<b>What are the TestDaF’s advantages? </b><br />

 All German universities recognise the TestDaF certificate. With a score of TDN 4 in all four subtests you will be able to get admission to an academic degree course, provided that the university of your choice accepts the other elements of your application. Admission for candidates whose<br />
scores are below TDN 4 is at the discretion of individual universities, depending on factors such as the course subject, type of degree awarded and course duration.<br />

 The TestDaF assesses the language skills necessary for study in Germany. The content and tasks of TestDaF are all related to academic, scientific and study-relevant topics. <br />

 The TestDaF assesses the four language skills separately (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, Written Production, Oral Production). The certificate shows four separate results, giving you a clear picture of your strengths and weaknesses in each skill.<br />

stands in the way of your studies in Germany as far as language is concerned
(naturally the remaining academic and legal requirements must also be met). A score of
TDN 5 shows that you have a very good knowledge of German, above that required at

Since every university in Germany has its own admissions
policy, it is at the discretion of individual universities to admit applicants whose
scores are below TDN 4 to courses of study. Please find out which TestDaF results are

<b>What is DSH?</b><br />

The DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang / Examination of German language proficiency required for admission to universities) assesses the following language skills in separate sections:<br />

– <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;">  </span>reading comprehension and linguistic structures<br />

The DSH is a language examination which tests whether you are capable of taking on studies in a University in Germany. This exam is taken before studies commence in each of the universities. The exam is in written and oral form.<br />

<b>DSH – who is exempted?</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
There are those who are exempted:<br />
<br />
    Applicants who can prove that they have the necessary language skills through higher institution qualifications which meet the German higher institution level<br />
    Student applicants who have the „Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultursministerkonferenz“ Level 2 (DSD II)<br />
    Student applicants who have obtained their „Zentral Oberstufenprüfung“ ZOP from the Goethe Institute.<br />
    Student applicants who have the „Kleines deutsches Sprachdiplom“ or the „Großes deutsches Sprachdiplom“ from the Goethe Institute<br />
    Applicants who have taken German as a foreign language classes and have successfully passed the „Festellungsprufüng or Abschlussprufüng“ in a German Studienkolleg.<br />
    Applicants who have completed a limited part of their studies as an exchange student at a German university.<br />

<br />
The DSH is a language examination which tests whether you are capable of taking on studies in a University in Germany. This exam is taken before studies commence in each of the universities. The exam is in written and oral form.<br />

<b>This examination is held by the University itself and consists of 4 written parts:</b><br />
<br />
1. Oral comprehension<br />
2. Reading comprehension<br />
3. Writing<br />
4. Linguistic structure.<br />

There follows the final oral examination.<br />
<br />
The universities are allowed to set their own version of the exam within the given framework. It is therefore important to enquire about the particular requirements of the university in question.<br />
<br />
<b>What is required in the examination ?</b><br />
<br />
  <br />
1. Oral comprehension <br />
<br />
A text of 50-100 lines is read out twice. You should take notes during the 2nd reading. Afterwards, questions relating to the structure and content of the texts need to be answered and a summary produced.<br />
<br />
2. Reading comprehension<br />
<br />
A scientific text of 30-60 lines, often adapted for the general reader, needs analysis. This consists of answering questions as to content and stucture, an explanation of the constituent parts, and the summarizing and re-structuring of the text.<br />
<br />
3. Writing <br />
<br />
From the given starting material - theses, short pieces of text, diagrammes and pictures - you are required to write a longer continuous piece of text in which the individual parts are described and explained. In this, it is not only contextual criteria such as the text structure and logical consistency that are important, but also the quality of use of language.<br />
<br />
4. Linguistic structure<br />
<br />
This test involves extension and convertion, using the vocabulary in the given written or oral presentation. The requirement is competence in grammatical structure such as is typically present in scientific texts.<br />
<br />
The duration of the written DSH test is generally 180 minutes in total. The individual parts can vary depending on the tasks. The oral test takes 20 minutes. Beforehand, you receive a short text or picture, normally from your specialisation, to analyse for another 20 minutes. In your discussion, you should show that you are able to understand, review and comment on the presentation of facts or the line of reasoning in a scientific work.<br />

<b>Formalities</b><br />

<br />
Be careful not to miss the final date of application date. The university must have received all the necessary documents by that date, otherwise your application will be denied ! <br />
<br />
Required Documents:<br />
<br />
- a fully-completed application form ( not forgetting your minor subjects !);<br />
<br />
- an officially certified copy,in the local language, proving entitlement to higher education.<br />
<br />
Depending on the country, this could be issued by:-<br />
<br />
      a German embassy or consulate;<br />
<br />
      the school or university which gave the matriculation certificate;<br />
<br />
      an attorney having the necessary authorization.<br />
<br />
In Germany this could be:<br />
<br />
      your country's embassy or consulate;<br />
<br />
      an attorney;<br />
<br />
      an accredited, sworn, translator.<br />
<br />
- an officially certified translation of the permit for higher education, except for the following languages: Daenisch, Englisch, Franzoesisch, Hollaendisch, Islaendisch, Italienisch, Katalanisch, Norwegisch, Portugiesisch, Rumaenisch, Spanisch, Schwedisch, Lateinisch.<br />
<br />
- An official notificaton of recognition from the Certificate Recognition Office (Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle) is required for certain countries.<br />
<br />
- Curriculum Vitae up to the date of application.<br />
<br />
- Statement of Motivation (Motivationsschreiben).<br />
<br />
- Proof of knowledge of German (Intermediate Level II). <br />
